Maruti Suzuki has been mulling an entry-level diesel for some time now. It was the WagonR diesel that started the rumormill. After the story first broke, its didn’t take long to get noticed by millions of Indians across the country. People are still eager to know about the WagonR diesel despite the launch of the Alto 800 that somehow managed to overshadow this story. Now, for the first we can reveal some details about the upcoming small diesel car from Maruti Suzuki.

An 800 cc diesel engine is being developed for the next generation of small cars. The new Alto that will be launched in 2014 is to get a diesel heart as well. While, the new engine can be used in the WagonR, Maruti Suzuki still hasn’t made its plan public. What we do know is that the Alto is the prime candidate for a diesel hear transplant. Given the pressure from the competition in the form of the Tata Nano diesel and Chevrolet Beat, Maruti Suzuki would prefer the Alto diesel over the WagonR to start with.

The twin-cylinder 800 cc direct-injection diesel engine would be built along similar lines as the one developed for the Tata Nano diesel and is touted to return a mileage of 30 kmpl. Tata Motors may have beat them to it as they prepare to launch the 2013 Nano diesel in the coming months. Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki will launch the WagonR Stingray during the festive season. Also, an Alto K10 facelift is being rumored to be on the menu.

I find solace in appreciating the beauty of automobiles. Bikes aren't my cup of tea, however there are few masterpieces that I would love to own one day. I dream of driving the Volvo FH16 750 someday. I am also into more heavy stuff like, astronomy, astrophysics (minus the number crunching).
