Last Saturday marked a new day for Japanese automotive manufacturer as the company released CNG variant of its already well performing model- Ertiga. The new launch is India’s first CNG equipped MPV to cruise through Indian roads, along with five other siblings namely Alto, WagonR, Eeco, SX4 and Estilo.

To be called ‘Ertiga Green’, the eco friendly model will be available in two variants. The base version will be available for Rs 6.52 lakh while the top end version could be bought for Rs 7.30 lakh (Ex-showroom Delhi). However, to begin with, Ertiga Green will be available only in some parts of the country like Delhi NCR, Gujarat, Mumbai, Pune and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga has always been one of the well performing models launched by the company. Ever since its launch in 2012, company has sold over 87,000 units. Even though the sales have been rather slow in the past few months, Ertiga Green is being looked at with hope of offering better fuel efficiency and performance and hence, a better reception. With launch of CNG infrastructure fitted model, Ertiga becomes the first model to be available in petrol, diesel and CNG variants. Besides being more gentle on the environment, Ertiga Green also promise better fuel efficiency with a mileage of 22.80 km per kg of CNG. However, other than the power infrastructure, Ertiga remains essentially same as its petrol and diesel versions.

The new launch can be considered just as much a strategy of company to boost its sales as much it is an initiative to being environment friendly models in passenger cars’ section. The company has been recording poor sales figures. May 2013 which was another abysmal month for Indian automotive market noted a drop of 14.4% in total sales of Maruti Suzuki as well. The domestic figures also fell down by 13% to rest at 77,821 units from the same time previous year. With launch of Ertiga Green, the slowing down Indian market is expected to get a jump start. Bookings for Ertiga Green have commenced with a payment of Rs 10,000 and delivery time of 15-20 days.

Interestingly, company had also offered discounts to its perspective customers on exchange of old cars throughout the month of June.
